Literacy: "To him who has much, much will be given"

“Literacy is more than simply the ability to decode phonetic symbols. “

In this brief peek into 6th grade at Immanuel, Mr. Shawn Barnett, Upper School Latin and History Teacher, explores literacy in a broader context. Rather than simply the reading of words, deeper literacy involves the understanding of context, which in turn requires a broader basis of knowledge. In helping students to understand the connections between their learning - from language, to history and geography, we help our students to look beyond themselves, our own times and culture as they learn about the world around them. Studying multiple fields of knowledge in an integrated way allows students to develop a deeper literacy and greater wisdom.

Walk-in-Wednesday: Latin II with Mr. Shawn Barnett

Interested in experiencing a classical, Christian education at Immanuel? We warmly invite you to attend an Admissions Open House or join us for a Walk-in-Wednesday tour to see us in action. You may also visit us each week here on the ILS Blog as we offer a virtual sneak peek into our classrooms from each of our teachers. Every Wednesday, we’re sharing a glimpse of what a visitor might observe when they walk into our classrooms at any given moment.

This week, Mr. Shawn Barnett, our Upper School Latin teacher, continues our “Walk-in-Wednesday” series with a peek into his Latin II class and the delightful scenes you might observe if you were to stop in to visit one of his classes this week!

We hope that you are encouraged by these snap-shots to join us in person to see us in action. Stepping through our red doors, you will be welcomed by the joyful sounds of learning, from poems and jingles in the lower grades, to great discussions and debates in our older grades. Singing and music ring out from the music room, and the wonderful sights and sounds of students and teachers engaged in learning can be witnessed throughout our campus.

Walk-in-Wednesday: 4th Grade with Mrs. Molly Barnett

Happy Thanksgiving Week! We are on break today (November 21st), but we wanted to still share a “Walk-in-Wednesday” for you to enjoy a sneak peek into our ILS 4th grade classroom.

Every week our ILS blog features an update from one of our teachers highlighting what a visitor might observe when they walk into our classrooms. Whether you are unable to join us for a Walk-in-Wednesday tour to see our students and teachers in action, or you would just like to get a better feel for what the experience of a classical Christian education is like at Immanuel, we hope this feature creates a picture of just some of what you might observe if they were to peek into Jr. Kindergarten, or 3rd grade, or Upper School Latin, or any one of our classrooms at ILS.

This week, join us in 4th grade, as Mrs. Molly Barnett presents a snap-shot of the delightful teaching and learning you may observe if you were to step into her classroom.

We hope you enjoy, and please visit the blog each week as we share additional “Walk-in-Wednesday” features! Have a wonderful Thanksgiving!

Summer Teacher Challenge: Latin Translation from Mrs. Krumwiede

Our ILS teachers invite our students (and parents!) to challenge themselves a bit this summer with our new Summer Teacher Challenge series! We will be sharing a variety of puzzles and challenges from our ILS teachers on our blog throughout the summer and giving you the chance to solve them. Share your solutions in the comments section for each challenge, and you could win a prize!

For each Challenge, students have one week to share their solutions. We will draw a name from the correct responses, and the winner will be able to choose from a variety of great prizes. We will have some fantastic books (including the new illustrated Harry Potter books!) from which to choose, as well as gift cards to Dairy Godmother!

Our first Summer Teacher Challenge comes from 3rd grade teacher, Mrs. Krumwiede. Try your hand at translating this short story from Latin into English, and the best translation will win! (For our younger Latin scholars, a glossary of terms is included in the comments section. For our older scholars, we encourage you to give us your best translation without using the glossary!)

Puer Parvus et Luna Magna
Puer parvus magnam lunam cum oculis spectat. Luna magna in eo lucet. Lux eum adit et puer parvus lunam magnam laudat, “Sum parvus. Es magna. Adsum. Abes. Eheu! Deus ea magna et parva creat!” Puer parvus ad stellas et lunam cantat. Est laetus. Deus puerum spectat et gaudet, “Hic puer mihi gaudium dat et eum beabo.”

Upper School Journalism Club: ILS Announces New Latin Teacher

By Kendall (6th Grade)

Since the beginning of the summer, ILS has been looking for a new Latin and History teacher. Ms. Habrecht interviewed six candidates- among them were teachers hailing from South Carolina, Idaho, Wisconsin, and even Colorado. Now the have found a teacher.

Only a few weeks ago, Manager of Operations, Mrs. Stone, met Mr. Will Thompson at a Bible study, and told him about the job position. He was then serving as an intern at the International Justice Mission with Field Operations for India.

Mr. Thompson is from Saint Louis, Missouri, where his dad was a Lutheran Pastor. He majored in History and Philosophy at the University of Missouri, although to choose a favorite between Latin and History, he enjoys Latin more.

Mr. Thompson taught English in Korea, and says he speaks "Survival" Korean enough to get around. After teaching he took two weeks on a solo motorcycle trip up the coast of Vietnam.

Mr. Thompson didn't always want to be a teacher. When asked what he wanted to be when he was younger, he responded, "I was thinking I wanted to be a doctor. My uncle is a doctor, and I liked how they help people in a tangible way."

When asked about the addition of Mr. Thompson as a new teacher, ILS Director of Advancement, Mrs. Work, commented, "I am always excited for new teachers to join our staff. I am confident Mr. Thompson will be an excellent addition to our ILS community."

The plan is to have him begin on January 17th.

Six Questions with Mrs. Krumwiede

In this week's edition of our Six Questions Series,  we hear from our 3rd grade teacher, Mrs. Anastasia Krumwiede, who is in her fifth year of teaching at ILS.

It is our privilege and honor to partner with our families, and we are so grateful for the support from our parents and families.

We want to hear from you! What questions would you like to ask our faculty? Share your questions in the comments below, and we may use some of these for upcoming faculty features!

Six Questions with Pastor Esget

As we welcome our many new and returning families to another new school year, we wanted to introduce (or re-introduce in some cases) you to all of our talented and caring faculty members.  Through our Six Questions Series, our teachers and faculty members have a chance to share some of their own reflections on classical, Christian education and what they enjoy most about our ILS community.

Today, ILS Superintendent and Senior Pastor of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Christopher Esget, shares his responses to our Six Questions.

Reflection on Leisure by Mrs. Krumwiede

Latin Makes Me Free: Silverpoint at National Gallery of Art
By Mrs. Krumwiede

Many make the argument that Latin is useful but this summer on a trip to the National Gallery of Art in D.C. with my family, Latin was more than just useful. Latin is for leisure and joy. Latin is for finding joy in higher things and it is also for freedom: the freedom to self-educate.
